Monroe Select Basketball Association
Monroe Select Philosophy
We play an up-tempo brand of basketball and try to fast break as often as possible. Our defense and transition game is our identity and we train with this in mind. We believe our offense starts with our defense. We teach a helping man to man defense where everyone defends the ball and their man in that order. Our style is a physically demanding, open court game that is fun to play and fun to watch. We encourage sound fundamentals, team play, team member support and reward positive attitude throughout the program.
We want to coach players that are totally committed and involved in the game of basketball. We want players that believe in themselves and see themselves as basketball players. Only through total preparation can success be truly achieved. We want our players to be successful on and off the basketball court. Our players understand the “H-quad” and know exactly where basketball fits in their lives.
Home – Family first
Health – Spiritual, and physical health second
Homework – Scholastic development third
Hoops – Only when the first three priorities are balanced does hoop become meaningful
Our coaching staff is very interested in each player as an individual, but we act in the best interest of the team. Team first – Individual second. We do not treat everyone the same in every respect. We attempt to give each individual and each situation the appropriate response according to our judgment bearing in mind what is in the best interest of the team.
We emphasize fundamentals and will spend a good percentage of time at each practice developing the basic skills of dribbling, shooting, blocking out, and defensive position. We stress the importance of hard work and learning how to work hard. Our success won’t come from a win-loss record but from the self-satisfaction of knowing we did all we could to become everything we are capable of becoming.
Bearcat Player Expectations
1. BE INTENT – we will not be outworked or out hustled. There are no shortcuts to success. Strive for perfection.
2. TRAIN – earn the right to be proud and confident of your condition.
3. PLAY AND LIVE WITH CONSIDERATION – unselfish team play and team spirit are the foremost essentials for the successful team.
4. BE A STUDENT FIRST - you are in school for an education. Keep that foremost in your thoughts. You become mentally tougher on the basketball court by being mentally tough in class and studies every day.
5. WE EXPECT YOUR BEST – the greatest student, the greatest athlete, the greatest person is the one that gives their all.
The Multi-Pressure Game
We play a quick reacting and up-tempo style of game. Its foundation will revolve around a hustling, pressurized defense. We emphasize the transition game --- anticipating and reacting as we convert.
We will push the ball up the floor creating early offensive opportunities. Our set offense will continue to pressure our opponents with rapid ball and player movement. We will screen, back cut, and post up in search of a high percentage shot.
Our style will take advantage of our quickness, strength, versatility, finesse, intelligence, and competitiveness. We will out-work, out-react, and out-hustle our opponents
Rebounding
Our board play will be aggressive and relentless. We must seize rebound position with sound, firm block out technique. We must be vicious as we rip down the ball and then make a quick, sound, outlet pass to initiate the break. On offensive boards we must go after every shot. Anticipation is the key --- 2nd and 3rd efforts must become routine
Early Offense
We will quickly advance the ball up the floor to create a numbers game. Emphasis will be on transition – we will fill lanes with quickness and be on balance and under control when reaching the scoring area. We will read the defense and seek a lay-in, power-up, or uncontested on balance 12-15 foot jump shot. We will run a secondary break, taking advantage of the 4th and 5th player down the floor as we look for a back lob, post up, back cut, or flash post situation
Set Offense
Our offense will be executed with intensity to create a high percentage shot or place the opponent in a fouling predicament. We will use a series of screens, cuts, and post-ups to get the shot we want. Emphasis will be placed on execution of proper screening, faking, and cutting techniques. Throughout our offense we will read the defense and use our passing ability to it optimum.
Special Situations
We will execute assignments during special situations with a high level of intelligence, concentration, and efficiency. We will play with physical, mental, and emotional poise throughout the game, but we will be especially effective at the end of the quarter, half, and game. Our style demands continuous reaction, anticipation, and adjustment. We will be at our best when our best is needed.
Total Game
We will play the final minute of the final game. We will strive for excellence and push ourselves to become the best we are capable of becoming.
Our Constants Will Be:
